Portable application is a standalone executable file. It can be placed in a folder on your computer, a USB flash drive, or any other removable media, and launched from there straight away. Portable software creates configuration files in its folder and usually doesn't change anything in the system.

In either case, portable apps can be used on any compatible device, wherever the user is. A portable app is not installed and as a rule, does not put associated files and configuration information on the host device but stores all application files and data together.

A portable is something such as a television, radio, or computer which can be easily carried or moved. The majority of people listen to music on portables or in cars.

Portable applications offer some definite advantages over their traditional counterparts. They're lightweight, and they allow you to move between computers while taking your apps and settings with you. Here's why they're different and why they're sometimes — but not always — a good choice.

Portable apps don't take advantage of shared assets on a system. While portable apps have advantages, such as leaving a smaller footprint on your PC, they may not work well with Windows UAC or multiple users and require extra care when ejecting from a USB drive.
