If you want great characters, good narrative, excellent dialogue and an engaging turn based combat system plus loads of other things... this game would have been worth double the launch price. But if you're not into story and characters, long cut scenes and listening to people talk a lot, I'd say buy with caution.
In fairness, there are two other options you can take. If the thought of catching up on eight Yakuza games fills you with dread, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is your next-best starting option. It's very much a clean-break from the mainline Yakuza series and takes place after the events of Yakuza 6.
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, a major departure from previous Yakuza games is the battle system. Instead of the real-time action beat 'em up mechanics of previous games, Yakuza: Like a Dragon features a real-time turn-based RPG type combat, with a four-person battle team.
45 hour. According to HowLongToBeat.com, the main story of Yakuza: Like a Dragon sits at about a 45 hour average completion time, but around 100 hours for the Completionist playstyle.
You don't absolutely have to, but I would recommend that you do. The game makes some effort to get new players up to speed with exposition and flashbacks but you'll miss out on a lot if you haven't played at least Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life before playing Like a Dragon Gaiden.
